The Elements of an Unforgettable School Trip to Thailand

Anyone looking for a memorable destination for their school trip should have Thailand as a top candidate. With its colourful history, rich culture, and a flavourful culinary tradition that's well loved around the world, Thailand has so much to offer. Students will find the historical buildings awe-inspiring and may also have an unforgettable personal encounter with sites and artefacts they would otherwise only see in books and movies.

The Majestic Buildings

The country's rich cultural heritage and deep spiritual character are evident in the ancient temples that dot Thailand's landscape - any successful, well-rounded school trip must include a visit to the temples in the itinerary. Top of the list is Ayuthaya, which used to be Asia's trading capital in centuries past due to its central location (traders from China, India and the Malay Archipelago cross here). The temples in Ayuthaya are a poignant reminder of the city's former glory-one million people lived here by 1700, thanks to the hustle and bustle of international trade, and they were only dispersed after the city's eventual destruction in the hands of the Burmese army. Also not to be missed is the Grand Palace-the official residence of Thailand's monarchs until 1946, when King Mahidol died. It is also home to one of the oldest and best known statues of Buddha.

The Floating Markets

For students visiting the country on a school trip, nothing can be more fascinating than the highly dynamic interaction and quirky ways of trade in the country's floating markets. There are several floating markets in Thailand, which can be considered "similar in their differences and different in their similarities." Of course, what brought these markets to existence is the country's natural landscape; with Thailand's dense forests making travel slow and hazardous, its rivers, since ancient times, have been heavily used as means of transportation and exchange. These days, the rivers serve as a dynamic venue for trade: boats selling cooked food (much prepared as you order) float side by side with those that sell other products, such as fresh fruits and vegetables. The well-known floating markets include the Damnoen Saduak, the Taling Chan, the Bang Ku Wiang, and the Tha Kha.

The Breathtakingly Beautiful Countryside

It's impossible to visit Thailand on a school trip without becoming enamoured of its awesome and delicate beauty. The country-often the target of Western colonisers in the past centuries, none of whom ever succeeded-is a veritable gem and a rich source of learning. Students may be delighted to know, for instance, that Phang Nga Bay, in Phuket, was the shooting location of the classic James Bond film, 'The Man with the Golden Gun'. The bay's limestone islands are jaw dropping, especially from afar, and can inspire interesting, in-depth discussions on geology. Moreover, there are also countless beaches-from Ko Phi Phi in southern Thailand to stunning Ko Chang.
