Making the choice to become a vegetarian is not overly complicated. You know what you feel about animal rights and where you draw the line with certain things. You also know the sort of health reasons you're seeking to implement with your new diet. However, not all vegetarian diets are the same. In fact, there are a total of four main variations to consider when picking the right one for you. So are you ready?
First, there is the standard vegetarian that everyone generally thinks of when they think of vegetarians in which no meat is consumed but which does allow for eggs and diary products. This is called a lacto-ovo-vegetarian and is one of the easiest vegetarian diets to follow as it still incorporates foods that provide rich amounts of protein and calcium without having to overload on legumes or more vegetables than you'd expect.
Next there is the vegan diet, which is a vegetarian diet except without the eggs or dairy products part. To be vegan means to abstain from any and all products that come from animals, which includes honey as well in some cases. The vegan diet will require a bigger commitment than all other vegetarian diets as you'll need to plan accordingly to get your protein and calcium elsewhere, plus you'll have to be vigilant about asking whether foods are made with milk or eggs. You'll soon realize that quite a lot of foods are off limits.
If you're not looking for the most hardcore diet, there is the pescetarian diet, which is a standard vegetarian diet that also includes fish. This diet allows for more variety in meals and a simple way to get a lot of really good nutrients as fish are loaded with the good stuff. It also functions as a simple way to transition from the standard diet including all meat into a vegetarian diet that contains none.
Then again, if giving up meat altogether is something you just can't or refuse not to do, the flexitarian diet is a final option. On the flexitarian diet you are for all intents and purposes a vegetarian, however you do eat meat on rare occasions, such as scheduling Fridays to be steak night or making a rule only to eat meat when it is offered to you. This is a great diet choice for those that want the health benefits of a vegetarian diet but don't want to have to give up meat completely.
These are just the main four types of vegetarian diets, but finding the right one for you is something you'll have to decide on yourself. Determine what you want and need out of your new diet and plan accordingly!
