Located on the northeastern coast of Spain, just south of the well-known major city of Barcelona, lies the stretch of coastline known as the Costa Dorada. The area covers ten counties and boasts over 786 hectares of soft, sandy beaches. It has stunning azure waters but a less rugged coastline than its northern neighbour, the Costa Brava.
School trips to the Costa Dorada can be focussed on a variety of aspects, including the rich history of the area, the wine and food of the region, and the interesting and picturesque elements of the local towns. Many of the towns began as humble fishing villages and are built around stunning castles, and there are plenty of historic locations worth visiting throughout the area. Just a few of these include the medieval monasteries of Poble, Santes Creus and Scala Dei. The backdrop of the mountains gives the area a sense of geographical drama, but, aside from the history and culture, the Costa Dorada is also simply a great place to go for some fun on school trips! To get the most of the experience, the itinerary should include the Port Aventura Theme Park and the beaches of Salou.
Port Aventura Theme Park
Travel just an hour southwest from the architectural delights of Barcelona to this activity-filled theme park that will add the element of fun and relaxation to school trips to the Costa Dorada. The Port Aventura Theme Park is the most visited theme park in Spain, and it's not hard to see why. The park is divided into six areas that correspond to different parts of the world. The PortAventura Mediterránia combines rides and shopping with the tranquillity of the Mediterranean; the Polynesia gives you splash rides among a jungle setting; Port Aventura China has roller coasters and a host of culinary delights to make any mouth water; Port Aventura Park Mexico brings Central America to Spain, with Mayan pyramids and rustic Mexican ruins; while the Far West makes the American West a wild-west reality for students. The newest part of the theme park, SésamoAventura, was opened in 2011; it is aimed at the park's younger visitors and students will be delighted to spot characters like Bert and Ernie wandering the streets. Students can also head over to the Aquatic Park to cool down if it all gets a little hot and energetic.
The Beaches of Salou
If school trips include the Port Aventura Theme Park on the itinerary, participants will already be in the region of Salou - so it's a must to take some time to explore the waterfront of this magnificent resort area. The string of spectacular sandy beaches are broken by picturesque rocky coves, giving the feeling of a true deserted getaway at times. There are several important historical monuments and buildings within and around the town, but the main draw is certainly the shoreline. The main promenade of Passeig Jaume I runs along the coast next to the longest beach in town, Llevant Beach. From there, the choice of 34 beaches to enjoy the sea and sunshine makes this a very popular area with tourists and locals.
